2017 trends

I feel a little silly talking about this stuff while my country is carelessly killing civilians left and right half way across the world (I don't think it's too harsh to put it in those terms), but I honestly don't know how to process every day being full of appalling news and yet living in a world where it doesn't directly affect me. I will let it rest for the moment, extremely grateful that I even have the option to drown out the horror of what's going on around me.

I'm not sure that I'm any good at predicting or noticing trends, but it's fun to try. Here are some things I think might be associated with 2017 when we look back, in terms of the design world.
I tried to pick fashion trends that weren't extremely obvious (like patches and pins on everything - as much as I love them!), but I started writing this list at the beginning of the year and a few of things already seem to have left "the scene", so maybe they weren't true trends after all? I also tried to pick trends (fashion and lifestyle both) that weren't already a big thing last year (or else I would have included the amazing and prolific use of tropical plants in the world of home decor).

Loose-fitting tailored pants for women seem to be in lots of street style looks and editorials, but unfortunately it's an expensive trend to emulate well. I was also noticing a lot of "robe jackets" - the one in the picture above is particularly night-robey, but in general, there seem to be trench-like jackets that are less structured than a classic trench and lighter weight. Slicked-back, wet looking hair was having a moment, and I'd like to try it out again because it's pretty easy and it looks very sleek. Ribbon-laced heels add a touch of interest in the shoe department, but I don't think I ever saw this style hit main-stream store shelves. Then again, I mostly shop second hand, so maybe I just missed them? Those early 2000s chunky-heeled wide-strap slip on heels are back, but I hate them, so I'm not going to include them on this list. I'm obsessed with all things holographic and it's a trend that is in stores like H&M so I can easily access it and incorporate some pieces without spending big bucks on something that will be out of style by next year. I pretty much wear what I want when I want anyway, but I appreciate the playfulness of iridescence. Finally, feather trim has exploded in the past few months. It's so diva-like, I love it. And I happened to find some vintage pieces at an estate sale recently that very much resemble some pieces from high fashion runways right now, so I was pretty excited about that!

Here are some non-fashion related things that are creating a buzz at the moment.

Oman and Canada have been mentioned a lot as travel destinations of late. Canada has been in the spotlight because of the burning-pile-of-poo that is American politics right now, but I think that recognition (and their hip Prime Minister!) has boosted interest in non-political tourism as well. Oman isn't mentioned a lot, actually, but trying to find obscure travel destinations definitely holds some status in the realm of people who like to travel, and Oman seems like a hidden gem. It's definitely on my list! // Ikebana floral arrangements are showing up more and more, and I am thrilled. It's a Japanese tradition, characterized by spidery and sparse shapes. It's a fantastic way to draw attention to a few particularly beautiful blooms, and it's also easy (at least in theory) for those of us who only have a handful of flowers to work with in the first place (as opposed to the buckets full that florists are working with). // The world of food definitely has trends, but they're hard for me to spot sometimes since I don't eat out a ton and there aren't a lot of progressive eateries in our area. However, I have noticed that vinegar seems to be popping up in many (and some unusual) places in cooking, and apple cider vinegar in particular is a big trend in the health-food world (dare I say, the new coconut oil?). Shishito peppers finalllly became available at some local groceries in our area, though I've been seeing them praised for a year or two now. When I looked up a recipe for how to cook them, Bon Appetit magazine actually said they were one of the 2016 trends they wouldn't miss, haha! But Jonas and I are obsessed with them, so I thought it was worth a share. You basically just blister them in a cast iron and salt them! We add a dash of sesame oil, soy sauce, and sesame seeds. // I didn't put this in my collage, but doesn't it seem like all of a sudden, all electronics work with voice command? It's still something I find super dorky and it's hard for me to imagine it being something that sticks around as the new normal, but who knows?!

Have you noticed anything that's a craze recently? Things you like? Things you can't wait to see disappear (revival of the the worst parts of 90s fashion, anyone?!)?

Spring 2014 Trend Report

I quit doing "Fresh vs. Over" a while ago because I thought it was kind of snotty of me, but the one I did on cage veils vs. flower crowns is my most viewed post of all time, le sigh. Being wildly popular and right all the time is not for the faint of heart. Dear people of the interwebs, thank you for appreciating my superior sense of style and my nearly spotless prediction record.

Diving right in, I will first tackle things that are still going strong, but should be on their way out any day.
[collage images by me, product details here]

1. Salted Caramel everything. Don't shoot the messenger! I actually like salted caramel fine as a flavor, but it's such a default for "exotic" or "exciting" now. Just about every menu has some salted caramel dessert, not to mention every coffee house and ice cream shop/brand. It's like butternut squash - not inherently bad, but please, let's stop considering this a creative option.

2. Wedge sneakers. Once again, the wedge is my friend - a perfect blend of fancy height and comfort. But wedge sneakers do seem a little impractical (or just two things that should never go together?) and I think they are not long for this world in terms of mass popularity.

3. Macaroons. In fairness, I have never had one of the pretty macaroons (or been to Paris), so maybe they are delicious enough to stay "in" for a while longer, but I feel like they're kind of a status thing (at well over a dollar each sometimes) that people who fancy themselves elite busily fawn over with their instagrams. And here's my snark coming out: but being obsessed with all things Parisian is pretty much the biggest cop-out of all for those who want to appear cultured or well-traveled. Then again, I can't complain that the cupcake is finally loosing its footing.

On to some up-and-coming trends that I'm a fan of!

4. Tin Types. Tin Types are an old kind of photograph (follow the link for the details) that I would love to learn how to make and have portraits of our family done in. The antique frames are incredibly beautiful as well. Several celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival had their portraits done in the tintype style this year, and workshops are popping up for those who want to learn the process (pick me!). I'd love to even have an antique one, but they are pricey.

5. Cactus Leaves. FINALLY, there are rumors that cactus might be the new kale. I can not freaking wait. I've never had cactus before, but I see it all the time in farmer's markets and groceries in our area, and I would give anything not to have to eat kale or hear about it, ever again. Cactus is generally sold with the spines removed already, and kale is basically the hardest thing to cook of all time, so there's really no contest here.

6. Overalls. Don't turn your nose up, they can be cute! Get the 90s out of your mind right now. You know I'll be instagramming my take on them if and when I get my paws on a pair.

7. Snake Jewelry. I wish this weren't picking up speed, because I want it to be just MY thing! As with tintypes, the popularity of snake jewelry hearkens back to the Victorian age. I really wanted to get Jonas a wedding ring that was two snakes entwined (they have some really cool symbolism attached to them) but ended up not, because many people also associate them with negative things.

8. Baskets. In the world of interior design, large baskets in the home - of all shapes, and styles - are gaining popularity. For me, this breaks down when I can't keep whatever is in the basket looking nice, but Ishmael's toys do look better in the decorative cloth round "bin" I got for our living room as opposed to all over the floor.

9. Cross-shoulder wedding dresses (image). I think this is a detail you'll begin to see at more weddings. I think it's interesting, but I've definitely seen it look bad on some people. The fit has to be perfect, or else it bubbles up on the chest.

10. Textile art wall hangings (see more examples). Not a fan. They look more like rugs torn up by cats than home decor. I appreciate that some of these would be difficult to make, but I do not understand the appeal. Even the professional ones scream "DIY" to me, and that's not always the best look for your home.

11. The untied bow tie (image). Have we officially run out of interesting ways to accessorize? I don't think this fad is going to hit mainstream where I live before it's over, but someone needs to tell celebrities that it really just looks like you forgot to tie your tie, and that's all....

Have you noticed any of these trends? Love 'em? Hate 'em? What have you been seeing a lot of that I missed?

Summer 2013 Trends

Take a look at some things that I think are topping or are about to top the charts:

1. Rattan Peacock furniture. I am in love.

2. Fluorescent rhinestone baubles, often including plastic braided with metal chain.

3. Fancy braids. My favorite is the braid mohawk , of course.

4. Flamingos - trust me, these are about to explode like foxes and owls and what-not. In the same vein, but perhaps lesser, banana leaves.

5. Hexagonal (aka honeycomb) anything. I've heard it called "the new chevron." Now that you've read this, it's gonna be one of those things that pops out at you from everywhere.

Extra credit, hexagonal rattan!

Have you noticed anything lately that's trending that you like or dislike? Kale has been huge for a while now, but that goes on my "detest" list. I may or may not let you know how I really feel about it later.

Cage Veils vs. Flower Crowns

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Floral Crowns

Flowers in the hair is so romantic, but it definitely gives a "frolicking through a field" feel at times, and too often I think the floral crowns are over-done and dwarf the face.

Cage Veils

I think these are so elegant, but they are becoming kind of cliche. Plus, they don't look very good on me, so that's probably a major reason why I'm willing to see this fad move on.

Bonus points if you did or plan to wear a "Hippie Jewel Headband." They've had a blip of popularity, but I can't say it's a look that I'm really into.

Marbling vs. Ombre

Marbling

This is fresh in that I haven't seen anyone do it in real life yet. And I really like it. And want some marbleized stuff in my house. This is definitely a trend that's come back from the 70s (?), but the colors are brighter now and I feel like it's "new again." And if Stella McCartney does it, I'm there.

Ombre

I know, you don't want to be my friend anymore. I still think ombre looks great (particularly indigo on denim!), but it's become the default way to spruce anything up - walls, fingernails, spoons, tshirts, hair, you name it. I'm kind of impressed that it caught on so dramatically too, because it seems to me to be hard to actually make look good. I know it's gonna be around for a while longer still, so I'll just say I support the smooth ombre over the blocked ombres. Another reason to move on is the embarrassment that occurs when you try and talk about it and everyone pronounces it differently.

Movies: Fairytales vs. Superheroes

It's time to own up, ya'll - very few of us have escaped at least some trickle down affects of hipsterdom. Hipsters are all about what's cool and what's not, and if - heaven forbid - more than an underground few are into the same thing, a true hipster can never be seen near said thing again without howling like the Wicked Witch of the West confronted by water. But then, most hipsters seem pretty homogeneous  right (ocher-colored clothing, anyone?)? It's a vicious cycle. I am ever-so-guilty of disdaining the overly popular, but there are also some worn-out things that I unashamedly adore (LOL cats). So let me just say up front and once and for all, since I hope to make this a regular feature on the blog, my "Fresh vs. Over" series is meant to be light hearted and tongue-in-cheek. Yes, I will probably rip on some stuff that you like, but liking something that I'm tired of seeing in pop-culture doesn't make you uncool. It's just one hipster's opinion, so we'll leave at that. I hope you enjoy it and discover something new and/or get a giggle out of it all.

Without further ado, I present to you my first pairing.

Reimagined Fairytale Movies
Ok, so we have Snow White and the Huntsmen, Mirror Mirror, Once Upon A Time (TV), and the upcoming Maleficent, to name a few. I haven't seen anything so far that I thought was stellar, but I'm still on board with the concept. I'm fascinated that the original tales - that we now mainly hear the Disney version of - are actually much more suspenseful and often dark. I recently saw Oz the Great and Powerful, which although not a really old school fairytale, is based on books written 100 years ago. I liked aspects of it (especially when I accepted it as almost intentionally cheesy [??]), but what I really want to see is a movie adaptation of the Wicked books, which I think are so much better than the play.

New Versions of the Superhero Pantheon Movies (Spiderman, Batman, Superman, etc.)

Talk about over done... I mean, a lot of the superhero movies are actually decent and I've enjoyed most of them (Jean Grey forever!), but I feel like it's at the point where studios are falling back on any old comic (or remake after remake of the same characters) just because it's a total cash cow. It's stopped feeling very creative or exciting when a new superhero movie is announced. I haven't seen the Amazing Spiderman, so I can't judge it as a movie, but seriously, we're going over it all again, like 5 years after the last trilogy ended? It's too soon!
